Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissues (uterine lining or endometrium) that are found inside the uterus grow in other parts of the body. They may attach to the fallopian tubes, ovaries, outside the uterine lining, the bowel, or other parts.

The reason for the external tissue growth is not known, but likely endometriosis causes are a faulty immune system, the effect of C-section delivery, and abnormal flow of menstrual blood. And some patients have some endometrial cells present from birth.

Dr Cilly may have to run several tests in order to provide an endometriosis diagnosis. Pelvic examination, Ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and Laparoscopy. These tests would help determine the location, size of the abnormal endometrial tissues, and possible causes.

Endometriosis treatment

After diagnosis, the endometriosis treatment approach would depend on the endometriosis symptoms, their severity, and choices of the patient. Available treatment options are:

Endometriosis pain medication

Over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs may be recommended. And in some cases, hormone therapy may be recommended in combination with the pain killers.

Hormone therapy

Hormone changes play a major factor in endometriosis. The rise and fall of hormones during the menstrual cycle can cause the thickening of the uteral wall, and for the cells to break down or bleed. With hormone medication, the growth of the tissues can be controlled.

 Conservative surgery

In instances where the patient is trying to become pregnant, conservative surgery can help remove the abnormal endometrial tissue while preserving the uterus and ovaries.

Fertility treatment

Fertility treatments are also recommended for patients having difficulty getting pregnant. The treatment mode could be to stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs or in vitro fertilisation. Dr Cilly can run diagnostic tests and recommend appropriate treatment options. We also provide the patient with possible outcomes so they can make suitable treatment choices.

Endometriosis Surgery

Endometriosis laparoscopic surgery is the best way to diagnose endometriosis with certainty. The procedure involves inserting a laparoscope through a small incision in the abdominal wall. A laparoscope is a long, thin tube with a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera at the front.

The laparoscope enables Dr Cilly to examine the organs inside the abdomen in real-time without open surgery. Before the procedure, the abdomen will be inflated to expand the abdominal wall so that Dr Cilly can see clearly.

Other additional small incisions may be required to insert instruments and move internal organs and structures for better viewing. If abnormal endometrial tissues are found, they will be cut and removed.

The procedure usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. If this endometriosis surgery is recommended for you, Dr Cilly will let you know how to prepare and what to expect during a laparoscope procedure.
